Will the results of the EU referendum affect our health and safety?

Health and safety is of huge importance to all of us at Access Maintenance solutions. To put it simply it is behind every operational decision we make. It is considered constantly and we make sure we go above and beyond to upkeep the safety of all our engineers, staff and members of the public.

When the results of the referendum came back a few months ago one of our first thoughts was to our health and safety practices, and what effect leaving the EU might have on them.

After some thought and discussion though, we realised that in reality there would not be much affect from leaving the EU. This is for a couple of main reasons.

The first of which is that much of the current EU health and safety legislation is built around pre-existing UK law. The UK has always been at the forefront of the health and safety movement, which is in part what has led us to become one of the world leaders in industry and technology. Current EU legislation takes a huge amount of influence from the Health and Morals Apprentices Act of 1802 and the 1947 Health and Safety Work Act.

The second reason is that for a long time now, here at Access Maintenance Solutions we go above and beyond what it legally required of us to ensure the health and safety of our engineers. We believe that it is our duty to our staff, and members of the public to do so. There is also the secondary benefit that an engineer who feels safe will simply work to a higher standard and provide a better service to the client.

If we do end up leaving the EU and there is a reform on health and safety which sees the regulations relaxing slightly it will not change the way in which we operate. Of course there will always be the organisations that try and safe money where they can, in whatever way possible, even if it is at the expense of their staffs safety. But Access Maintenance Solutions is not such an organisation.
