How to Keep Birds off Your Roof

Birds landing and nesting on your roof is a problem for multiple reasons. The first and most obvious is that they are very visually displeasing. If a large amount of them gather on your roof then the amount of droppings they drop can be staggering.

The next reason is that they are damaging. If a bird is nesting they will damage the area they are in when they create and build a nest. Also, if they are nesting in your home they can keep you up at night. Their droppings can also be corrosive, which can damage any structure they are left on.

Thankfully, there are measures that you can take in order to keep them off your property.

Bird netting is a fantastic device for keeping birds of your roof. They simply drape over the edge of your building and make it harder for birds to get into nooks and crannies, stopping them nesting. Netting is usually available with varying size holes and in different colours, to better blend in with your building.

Anti-perch spikes are a lot more direct, and tackle the problem of birds resting on the edge of your building. They are literally what they sound like: spikes that sit around your coping. Their sharp points prevent birds from landing there. They are more visually apparent than netting but are very effective.

There is an argument to make that the above measures are temporary, and given time birds will circumvent them and carry on perching on your roof. However there are lasers that are now available that activate when a bird is detected. This stuns the bird and leaves a ‘danger area’ imprint on the birds mind, thus stopping it ever coming back.
